SKYTITE® Spray Foam Roofing System Helps Reduce Tear-Off, Downtime, and Long-Term Roofing Concerns
When two buildings at the BASF McIntosh site in McIntosh, Alabama needed roof replacement, the facility team turned to a solution they already trusted: SKYTITE® spray foam roofing system.
The site had previously installed SKYTITE on seven other buildings and had seen the benefits firsthand. For this project, SKYTITE® was applied over much of the existing built-up roof system, helping reduce tear-off, minimize disruption, and support long-term roof performance.
Project Overview
Location: BASF McIntosh Site, McIntosh, Alabama
Date: Fall 2018
Featured Application: Roofing — Commercial
Total Project Size: Over 46,000 sq. ft.
Building #1 Roof: 20,223 sq. ft.
Building #2 Roof: 26,132 sq. ft.
Existing Roof Type: Traditional built-up roofing system
Applicator: Insulated Roofing Contractors
Solution: SKYTITE® spray foam roofing system
The Challenge
The two buildings had aging traditional built-up roofs, with most of the damage caused by wet areas. A full roof tear-off would have increased project time, cost, waste, and disruption — especially challenging for an active manufacturing facility.
The team needed a roofing solution that could address damaged areas while preserving as much of the existing roof system as possible.
Why SKYTITE Was Selected
SKYTITE was chosen because it could be installed over the existing built-up roof where appropriate, requiring only 10% tear-off before application. This helped reduce landfill waste, shorten the installation timeline, and limit disruption to ongoing operations.
One of the biggest selling points of the SKYTITE roofing system is that you don’t have to tear-off all of the roofing that hasn’t been damaged. It really reduces the cost because you’re not having to remove the entire roofing system and replace it from scratch.
Key Benefits
Minimal Tear-Off
Because SKYTITE® can be installed over many existing substrates, the project team was able to avoid removing usable roof areas. SKYTITE® spray foam roofing system can be installed over 95% of existing substrates, making it well suited for retrofit roofing applications.
Less Downtime
For a large manufacturing facility, staying operational matters. By reducing tear-off and allowing much of the existing roofing to remain in place, SKYTITE® helped support a faster, less disruptive roof replacement process.
Long-Term Performance
When applied by a Team Q Contractor and properly maintained, SKYTITE® roofing systems can provide a service life of 20 to 30 years.
Safety Considerations
Reduced tear-off and efficient spray application can help limit the time contractors spend working on the roof, reducing exposure to elevated work conditions.
The Result
With this installation, the BASF McIntosh site brought its total to nine roofs using SKYTITE®. The project highlights how spray foam roofing can help commercial and industrial facilities address aging roof systems while reducing tear-off, minimizing downtime, and supporting long-term roof performance.
