BASF Spray Foam: Driving Sustainable Construction

At BASF, sustainability is at the core of everything we do. Our spray foam systems are designed to reduce environmental impact without compromising performance, comfort, or safety. BASF products not only meet rigorous testing standards but also contribute to a more energy-efficient and durable built environment.

Why the Frog?

Wallie the frog embodies adaptability, environmental awareness, and the importance of sustainable choices. Frogs are ectotherms, meaning their body temperature is influenced by their environment—so they maintain comfort by seeking out suitable microclimates (sun, shade, moisture) rather than regulating internal temperature the way humans do. Similarly, people depend on building materials like WALLTITE® to help create consistently comfortable indoor spaces. WALLTITE® spray foam insulation supports healthier indoor environments by reducing air leakage, improving indoor air quality, and delivering superior air-sealing for better moisture control and fewer allergens. WALLTITE® is GREENGUARD and GREENGUARD Gold* certified for sensitive environments like schools and healthcare facilities.

Lower Embodied Carbon with Next-Generation Chemistry

As part of BASF’s mission to create chemistry for a sustainable future, WALLTITE® Series close-cell spray foam use hydrofluoroolefin (HFO)-based blowing agents with a significantly lower global warming potential (GWP) than traditional HFCs. These formulations represent a major step forward in reducing the environmental footprint of spray foam insulation.

Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) data shows that WALLTITE® has a much lower installed GWP compared to conventional plastic foams using HFC blowing agents—and even lower than some materials often perceived as “green,” such as semi-rigid mineral wool.

Beyond its inherent efficiency, WALLTITE® can further reduce a building’s total embodied carbon by replacing the need for additional materials like full air and vapor barriers. The result is a lighter environmental impact and a more efficient, high-performing building envelope.

 GREENGUARD® and GREENGUARD Gold® Certifications

WALLTITE® and ENERTITE® have achieved both GREENGUARD® and GREENGUARD Gold® Certifications, verifying compliance with some of the world’s most stringent chemical emissions standards.

GREENGUARD® Certification ensures products meet established limits for indoor air quality.

GREENGUARD Gold® Certification extends this assurance to sensitive environments such as schools and healthcare facilities, where air quality is especially critical.

These certifications reflect BASF’s commitment to healthier indoor environments and low-emission materials.

Supporting LEED® Project Certification

The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®) rating system, developed by the Canada Green Building Council (CaGBC), is a leading framework for sustainable design and construction. WALLTITE® can contribute to earning points in several LEED categories, including:

Materials and Resources

MRc2: Building Product Disclosure and Optimization – Environmental Product Declarations (Option 1: EPD)

MRc3: Building Product Disclosure and Optimization – Material Ingredients (Option 1: Material Ingredient Reporting)
